Rationing of Health Care, Really?

I was made aware of an ad in our local newspaper regarding a meeting this Saturday by a group from Johns Hopkins and UPMC that is asking for volunteers to meet in Hagerstown to discuss the allocation of scarce medical resources during emergencies.  Wow, that seems pretty gutsy with all of the discussion around death panels under Obamacare.  Actually, it’s not that farfetched.  The federal government had similar discussions when the SARS scare occurred a few years ago.   I recently attended a meeting of trustees and there was a presentation on the rationing of care.  It was suggested by the physician presenter that all hospitals need to begin having such discussions in their hospitals and health systems, as well as in their communities.  With the financing of health care being unsustainable going forward, you will begin hearing more about rationing; but from my perspective, it’s still too soon in many communities, especially this one.
